Method of Exchange Backup and Recovery of Corrupted BKF Files

Exchange user knows the importance of Exchange Server, that’s why they are regularly updated by current backup of Exchange database.

There are two possible ways that can be used to take backup of Exchange database:-

Online Backup and

Offline Backup

Online Backup:- As the name is showing, this backup can be done only when Exchange Server is operative. It means taking backup in Exchange Server that is accessible in bacup software. In other words Exchange Server is online and allowing user for transaction of work without any delay and interruption. Main feature of Online backup is when it completes it automatically clear database log that is created in taking backup.

Offline Backup:-In this backup process Exchange Server should be shut down. Then make a copy of original data and try to take backup from that so if any corruption happens, there is a secured second database for taking backup.

This is the method that restores the Exchange System at its last transaction log file. In this method inconsistent database files come. But when Exchange Server is properly shutdown all transactions are being committed to the database then only restoring of database is in consistent state. That is called planned offline method.

When Server fails, we have to copy database in some other location or suppose if Exchange Server fails before this backup, databases can't be consistent. So only one way is left with us that is repairing corrupted files with recovery process. That is called unplanned offline method.

There is a fact that at the file system level Exchange store is checked for corruption not at page level. This can be done by verifying checksum at 4 kb block or page in the database. Or suppose checksum is wrong then Exchange will not allow to take backup. Checksum failure leads to termination of backup process.

If services are running and you are trying to back up of files and folders of actual Exchange server, you may succeed but without skipped files.

These all methods are for taking backup when server is in running state or there is no damage in its database.
