We all Exchange Server users know how
much backing up of our daily data is required. If we make any delay
in taking backup, we can have risk of losing our essential or
confidential information from Exchange Server database. That's why
taking backup should be in habit of regarding person (administrator).
In case of database corruption all the critical data will become
inaccessible and cannot be restored in the absence of backup.
Following causes result in corruption
of Exchange server database:-
- System Software Program Corruption
- Hard drive failure
- Backup failure
- Missing catalogue files
- Dirty shutdown of the system
- Suddenly damage of System software and hardware
- Virus Attack
- Missing information from catalog files and header
- CRC or (Cyclic Redundancy Check) errors
- Backup software malfunctioning
All the backup of system is stored in
BKF file type that is primarily associated with 'WindowsXP' by
Microsoft Corporation. The default extension is .bkf but it can be
renamed to any extension. For XP Home this is not inbuilt utility.
You need to install it from the added value directory of your XP Home
distribution disc for recovery process.
Once installed it shows up in the Start -> Programs -> Accessories menu. If you make multiple backups a catalog of those backups is kept on the hard disk in the folder.

Backing up of data on regular basis
will help in emergency cases of original data loss. This backup file
is very much useful when actual files are lost.
Most often we use inbuilt NTBackup
utility for the process of taking backup of files and folders.
NTBackup is a popular tool and equipped with NT versions of Microsoft
Windows operating system.
At the end of backup process, when you double click on the file in order to view it, your computer screen shows following error message:-
"There is no information
contained in the file..."
And this message will come every time
when you will restore data from bkf file. This action shows that BKF
file is now inaccessible and data can't be restored through NTBackup.
It means that BKF file is corrupted or it needs recovery.
But there are some limitations with
NTBackup utility such as:-
- This utility doesn't take backup of hidden files or directories which are confidential and need authentication.
- For the full backup through this utility you have to be one of that authenticated persons from backup group.
- This Exchange BKF recovery utility cannot be used to back up registries on remote computers.
In such a scenario you can look for any
commercial utility such as Stellar Phoenix Exchange BKF Recovery tool. This flawless software can examine all the
cause behind corruption and provide perfect recovery of backup file
with an option to find BKF file from specific drive. This wonderful
application is useful for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and 2007.
